Are you planning to go trick-or-treating tonight? While it may be too late to make major alterations to your Halloween costume, there are a few pointers you can use to refresh your good safety habits:
- Be aware that drunk driving rates do spike on Halloween, according to NHTSA data. Avoid contributing to the problem by having a designated driver, or using a taxi to get home after a party.
- Pedestrian fatalities are about 10 percent higher on Halloween than other nights. Be sure to carry a flashlight, glowsticks, or incorporate reflective tape into your costume.
- Parents -- review safe street-crossing habits with your children.
- Drivers -- Go slow, and be on the lookout for kids wearing dark costumes in the road. Avoid passing stopped vehicles, as they may be dropping off kids.
