Every year at the New York International Auto Show, the final winners of the World Car Awards are announced.

The process of deciding the World Car Awards is long and arduous. A jury panel of 73 automotive journalists score vehicles in several categories based on various criteria. For the World Green Car, those criteria include tailpipe emissions, advanced power technology, and fuel consumption.

The Toyota Mirai made it to the final three at NYIAS 2016, along with the Toyota Prius. The Mirai prevailed over its hybrid brethren in the end -- hydrogen fuel cell technology wowed the judges, reigning as the supreme green innovation.

Why hydrogen?

There are no tailpipe emissions, unless you count water vapor (who counts water vapor?), and the fuel itself can be sustainably sourced from resources ranging from compost, to landfill gas, to lemonade.
