Oil is the lifeblood of your car. Oil is vital for the optimal performance of the engine. Simply put, if there is no oil, there is no lubrication and the hundreds of parts that move inside your engine will stop working. And, if that happens, the engine becomes irreparable. And, just like that, you need a new engine. Do you know how expensive that is?

Routine oil changes are necessary to avoid that. The Service Department at Mountain State Toyota is here to guide you and help you decide which oil is better for your vehicle, and answer any questions you may have about the care and maintenance of your vehicle. We also have low and competitive prices on oil changes and parts.

The Function Of Motor Oil

To put it in the simplest of terms, motor oil is a lubricant. All engines have parts which move against each other, and this friction creates heat. The oil lubricates these parts so they can work effectively.

Oil also helps to prevent excessive wear of these moving parts, it cleans their surfaces, keeps the engine cool, inhibits corrosion, avoids overheating of said parts and keeps the engine sealed properly.

As the oil does its work, it accumulates dirt and contaminants. That's where the oil filter comes into play. It helps remove these dirt particles and contaminants. Thus, it must be changed at the same time, the oil is changed.

Difference Between Conventional And Synthetic Oil

Conventional motor oil comes directly from crude oil. Synthetic oil has added lubricants that increase the oil's ability to keep engine parts slick, especially at high temperatures. Additionally, synthetic oil helps to reduce long-term wear and tear on the engine, making it last longer.

Talk to one of our Service Center advisors and learn which kind of motor oil is better for your vehicle.

Synthetic oil costs more, but it could save you money in the long run.

Changing The Oil

Best case scenario is that you change the oil and the filter every 3,000 miles or every three months. However, if you live in an area with mild weather conditions and your driving habits are fairly regular and consistent, then you can go as long as 5,000 miles or 6 months. But, if you live in an area with severe weather conditions and your driving habits are rough and rugged, then you might need monthly oil changes.

5 Signs You Need To Change The Oil

Fresh, clean and new oil will optimize the performance of your vehicle. It will clean, lubricate and keep your engine health and working properly.

  1. If the oil is dark and dirty when you remove the dipstick (for instructions on how to check oil levels, ask one of our advisors or refer to the Owner's Manual of your vehicle).
  2. Louder Engine Noise and Knocking
  3. The "Check Engine" light or the "oil can" icon are lit in your dashboard display.
  4. Exhaust Smoke
  5. Oil Smell Inside the Cabin.

The Importance of the Oil Change

When the oil is changed in your car, the old oil is removed and with it the dust, dirt, debris and other contaminants that are in your engine. New oil is placed. Additionally, the oil filter is replaced with a new one.

This is an important part of your regular maintenance schedule because if not done properly or timely, then the engine parts begin to break down and your maintenance costs increase.

The 4 main reasons to change the oil are:

  1. Lubricates the Engine
  2. Cleans the Engine By Removing Sludge, Dirt and Other Contaminants
  3. Improves Gas Mileage and Performance
  4. Extends the Life of Your Vehicle.
